Why Custom

High visibility impact -- we're preparing for growth here, such as expanding the crew of Drivers, and your success managing that growth will be noticed. In addition, you will share ideas and insights in company-wide logistics meetings.

Professional development -- in addition to expanding your experience across multiple areas, you'll showcase your leadership skills, including your ability to develop the talent we need to grow. Prove yourself in this role and you might advance to a Plant Manager position. Some promotions may require relocation.

Stability and growth -- Quikrete is pursuing an aggressive expansion program; in fact, they acquired Custom and two other companies at about the same time. The QUIKRETE® Companies is the largest manufacturer of packaged concrete and cement mixes in the U.S. and Canada.

Leading edge innovation -- it's true: grout and adhesives aren't the sexiest products around; in fact, if we do our job right, people don't even think about what's behind their tile for years and years. Still, no one does it better than Custom, and we are committed to developing innovative technological solutions. For example, our Controlled Cure TechnologyTM (CCT), used in many Custom products, controls the rate at which water evaporates during the Portland cement curing process, promoting much faster and more consistent hydration.

Great environment -- by taking a bottom-up approach and involving employees in the decision-making process, we have created high morale along with high productivity. We have a large number of Custom employees who have been with us for 10, 15, and even 20+ years.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary, we offer comprehensive benefits.

Pictured: you will oversee the logistics behind products used in a variety of settings, from a do-it-yourselfer's bathroom remodel to major projects, such as this unusual large format tile installation in the Brocade Communications corporate headquarters. We earned the 2010 Tile Contractors Association of America (TCAA) Commercial Project of the Year award in partnership with DeAnza Tile on this project.

Keys to Success

This is a hands-on leadership role and, while you will spend some time in your office, you'll also need to get out, understand the business and the culture, and work alongside your people. At times you may operate a forklift or work the barcode scanner. This will help you establish credibility and also identify the strengths and weaknesses in the different areas.

There is an unusually high number of long-tenured employees throughout Custom, and we value their commitment and loyalty. At the same time, even positive change can be difficult for people. This aspect of the role will be, frankly, challenging. In addition to establishing your credibility, you'll need to be proactive about acknowledging strengths -- in both people and processes -- while also helping people understand the benefits of any changes you implement. There is a strong commitment here to a shared vision, and you'll be able to leverage that.
