The Role

Troubleshooting is the name of the game

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will work either our second or third shift, depending upon your skill and experience, and be responsible for performing production installations, maintenance, preventative maintenance and alterations on automated industrial equipment, systems and sub-systems.

In tandem with the rest of the team, growing to include five or six Industrial Maintenance Mechanics and the Maintenance Manager, you’ll work on day-to-day projects, including preventative maintenance, line calls and other duties as assigned, including capital projects. Your primary function will be to troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust and/or repair electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic production and facility systems.

If you have the skill and experience to get in with your meter and figure out what’s wrong, we can help you learn other areas you may need.

The way your day breaks down
We run two lines: one with a wet mixture that produces WonderBoard, and a second, large power line for grouts and mortars. When equipment goes down, it’s essential that you can fix it quickly and get the line running again in order to reduce or eliminate downtime. In addition, the first line, which only runs during the first shift, must have repairs completed quickly, before the core materials begin to harden. Typically, you’ll spend 50% of your hands-on time responding to line calls and 50% on preventative maintenance. To help organize your efforts, you’ll leverage our MP2 computer maintenance system which tracks workflow, time per project, manages maintenance history and more.

Our equipment
All the equipment in our Frankfort, Indiana facility is automated. We have Allen Bradley and German automation, an auto-packer and palletization equipment and more. You’ll perform preventative maintenance on all equipment and repairs on anything that goes down. Our mechanics are adept at lateral logic for problem solving, and are skilled and comfortable troubleshooting.

Day-to-day
Some of your specific activities will include:
  • Troubleshooting and repairing all packaging, processing, and plant equipment
  • Contributing to and participating in the installation of projects and/or capital expenditures, and improvement initiatives
  • Installing and overseeing all mechanical aspects on everyday work orders, projects and/or capital expenditures by:
    • Ensuring proper authorization and performance of machinery and mechanical equipment
    • Completing preventative maintenance requirements on plant equipment, building and offices
  • Conferring and communicating with Production employees to identify equipment operational problems and repetitive issues
  • Partnering with other Industrial Maintenance Mechanics by:
    • Communicating and understanding what was done the previous shift and picking up projects in process as necessary
    • Communicating with Mechanics working the following shift to share pertinent information
  • Ensuring preventative maintenance on all machinery and following a robust PM schedule
  • Maintaining proper paperwork (work orders, reports, schematics) by using the MP2 system to properly record work orders, track repair histories, inventory and update equipment information
  • Organizing and maintaining shop and parts inventory through proper work behaviors and by following procedures
  • Taking responsibility for work accuracy, quality, productivity and safety of all lead persons and production staff
  • Strictly adhering to company rules and policies
  • Ensuring all plumbing and HVAC is in working order (i.e. toilets, sinks, etc.) and preventative maintenance on all HVAC machinery is current
  • Designing and fabricating equipment (i.e. mezzanines, catwalks, guards)
  • Ensuring that all maintenance areas and aisles are kept clean, organized and safe at all times (all material shall be removed immediately after use)
  • Ensuring that inside/outside storage areas are kept clean, organized and safe
  • Performing other duties as assigned
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

What's in it for you?

Autonomy in broad role
This is a multifacted role where there is always plenty to be done. As already noted, there will be preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, capital projects, and continuous improvement efforts, and you'll most often be taking on your responsibilities independently. That is especially true on the third shift. If you're the person we're looking for, you look forward to assuming "ownership" of your role, and making an impact by keeping things moving.

Learning environment with advancement potential
You'll work on a lot of equipment you haven't seen before, giving you the opportunity to learn and grow your skills. Learn everything you can and prove yourself, and you can advance your career with Custom Building Products, moving from a Level II to III Maintenance Mechanic, or stepping up to a lead role. There is plenty of opportunity with CBP at the Frankfort plant or at other plants across the nation.

Great environment
By taking a bottom-up approach and involving employees in the decision-making process, we have created high morale along with high productivity. You'll find highly competent and empowered employees with a strong sense of teamwork delivering strong performance according to well-organized processes in a clean and well-maintained facility. Your challenge will be to take a good thing and make it even better.

Pride
We've got a clean and beautiful plant that you can feel proud supporting.

Stability and growth
Quikrete is pursuing an aggressive expansion program. The QUIKRETE® Companies is the largest manufacturer of packaged concrete and cement mixes in the U.S. and Canada.

Leading-edge innovation
It’s true: grout and adhesives aren’t the sexiest products around; in fact, if we do our job right, people don’t even think about what’s behind their tile for years and years. Still, no one does it better than Custom, and we are committed to developing innovative technological solutions. For example, our Controlled Cure Technology(CCT), used in many Custom products, controls the rate at which water evaporates during the Portland cement curing process, promoting much faster and more consistent hydration.

Great environment
By taking a bottom-up approach and involving employees in the decision-making process, we have created high morale along with high productivity. We have a large number of Custom employees who have been with us for 10, 15, and even 20+ years.

Excellent compensation
Our compensation and benefits package includes a strong starting wage dependent on years of experience; overtime opportunities; medical, dental and vision coverage; basic life and personal loss insurance; a 401(k) plan; continuing training, education and ongoing professional development; paid vacations, holidays; and more.

Keys to Success

If you’re looking for a role where you’ll sit and wait for work orders, then this is not a good fit for you. We have a fast-paced environment where there’s always something to do. You'll need to keep a finger on the pulse of the plant and respond proactively. Every day, you should be prepared to jump in with both feet and work the whole shift long.

In addition you'll need to manage multiple activities and priorities, such as keeping PM activities moving forward while also responding to issues that arise. Speed and accuracy will be important to keep the lines moving. Our operation is volume driven, so you'll need to make decisions and take action quickly, avoiding "paralysis by analysis." At the same time, you'll need to make strong repairs quickly and track everything you do.

If you’re a go-getter, you’re always looking for something to do, you have the ability to think and troubleshoot independently, and you’re always learning, then we want to hear from you!
